The 7.9-mile, moderately frequented Ptarmigan Ridge Trail is close to Glacier, Washington, and is classed as moderate. You’ll be walking out in the open, among the surrounding mountains in all their glory. The round trip trail offers you a unique opportunity to hike up close to Mt. Baker. You will journey over volcanic rock, gorgeous alpine meadows, and patches of snow. The trail is a true beauty to behold, the abundance of color that the meadow flowers provide act as a gentle contrast to the robust mountains around you. 

Washington State’s Ptarmigan Ridge Trail has a vast array of species that reflects the North Cascades’ many habitats. Mountain goats sauntering along stony hillsides and marmots basking on rocks might be spotted by hikers. The ptarmigan, a resilient bird that blends in perfectly with its mountain surroundings, inspired the trail’s name.

The snow can remain well into the summer, so come prepared with proper equipment and supplies. July through October is the ideal time to visit. Make sure to check weather conditions before you head out on the trail, check weather conditions online.

From the town of Glacier, Washington, go east on Mt. Baker Highway for about 24 miles to reach the Ptarmigan Ridge Trail. Proceed for another 2.5 miles to reach the Artist Point parking area, passing the Heather Meadows Visitor Center. As long as they are leashed, dogs are welcome to join you on the trek. You will need a Northwest Forest Pass.
