Length: 8.2 miles (out and back).

Weather: June through October is the ideal time to visit.
Parking and Access: Dogs must be on leash, and you will need a Northwest Forest Pass.

The epic 8.2 mile hike has a vigorous 3789 foot elevation gain in store for experienced hikers wanting a challenge. The hike is an out and back style trail and rated as difficult. The spectacular 360-degree landscape makes the potentially arduous hike to the top of Church Mountain well worth it. You’ll be privy to views of the rugged peaks and deep valleys of the cascades from the summit. A truly unique view from the top down, your eyes will feast on incredible angles of famed peaks. Some examples include Mt. Baker, Mt. Shuksan, and Goat Mountain. 

Not only will the hike exhilarate you,  but it will enthrall you with its magnificent fauna and flora. The hike first warms you up with a saunter through a typical Pacific Northwest coniferous forest. After you pass the dense cedars and hemlocks, it’ll then quickly live up to its rating of difficulty, as you’ll begin your ascent up the mountain. After an approximate 3 miles, you’ll be rewarded with the trail leveling out and breaking into a beautiful flower meadow. A variety of butterflies and bees roam the meadows there, adding to the feeling of enveloping tranquility. The area is truly teeming with wildlife; you may get to see things like  mountain goats that appear to be defying gravity or marmots scampering among the rocks. 

To avoid snow and harsh weather conditions, the ideal time to visit is during the months of June to October. You can check the area status on the USDA website.

The closest town to Church Mountain Trail is the town of Glacier, WA. From Glacier, go approximately 1.7 miles east on Mt. Baker Highway to the Church Mountain Trailhead. After taking Glacier Creek Road to the left for about 0.1 mile, turn right onto Forest Road 3040. Proceed approximately 3 miles on Forest Road 3040 until you reach the Church Mountain Trailhead, which is on your left. You can leave your car in the designated parking area before
