Phoenix Weather
What Each Season is Like
Phoenix is known for its scorching summers, mild winters, and surprisingly cool fall and spring months. If you’re planning a stay at one of our Phoenix rentals, understanding what the weather will be like in each season can help you make the most of your time in this desert city.
Fall in Phoenix: The Perfect Balance
Fall in Phoenix offers the best of both worlds. Temperatures begin to drop from the searing highs of summer, settling between 60°F and 90°F by November. This season is often described as perfect for outdoor activities. From hiking at Camelback Mountain to attending outdoor festivals, fall provides visitors with comfortable weather for exploring the city and surrounding nature.
September can still be quite warm, but by October, the average daily high is in the 80s, making it ideal for everything from golf to al fresco dining. Phoenix also hosts a number of festivals and events in the fall, such as the Arizona State Fair and Oktoberfest. If you’re visiting during this time, you can expect clear skies and cool evenings, so pack layers—light clothes for daytime and a sweater or jacket for the evening chill.
Winter in Phoenix: Mild and Comfortable
While most of the country braces for winter cold, Phoenix stays mild with daytime highs ranging from 60°F to 70°F. Winter is the peak tourist season as visitors from colder climates flock to Phoenix for a warm escape. It’s a great time for golfing, hiking, and sightseeing without worrying about the desert heat.
Evenings and early mornings can be chilly, with lows dipping into the 40s, so pack layers if you’re planning outdoor activities. Despite the cooler mornings and nights, Phoenix remains dry throughout the winter, with very little rainfall.
For those planning to stay at one of our luxury Phoenix rentals, winter is ideal for enjoying heated pools and outdoor dining. A trip to the desert botanical gardens, or a round of golf at TPC Scottsdale, will feel just right with the pleasant winter temperatures.
Spring in Phoenix: Perfect Outdoor Weather
Spring in Phoenix is an outdoor lover’s dream. Temperatures range from the 70s to the low 90s by the end of May, and the weather is often described as perfect for hiking, golfing, or simply exploring the city. The spring season is short, but it’s arguably the most beautiful, as wildflowers bloom across the desert landscape.
March is especially busy due to MLB Spring Training and other seasonal events. If you’re visiting for the Cactus League, you’ll be met with sunny days and warm afternoons, making it the ideal weather for watching baseball or attending outdoor events. Hiking trails around the McDowell Sonoran Preserve or the Superstition Mountains are incredibly popular in the spring as well, with the desert in full bloom.
As the season progresses, April and May bring slightly warmer weather, with highs in the 80s and 90s. It’s a great time to enjoy outdoor dining, explore Phoenix’s vibrant arts scene, or take a day trip to the Grand Canyon.
Summer in Phoenix: Scorching Heat
In summer, Phoenix lives up to its desert reputation. Temperatures regularly soar above 100°F, with highs reaching 110°F or more during June, July, and August. The city experiences clear skies and intense sun, making this the hottest season by far. If you’re visiting in the summer, be prepared to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and seek shade or air-conditioned spaces during the heat of the day.
Even though summer brings extreme temperatures, Phoenix does experience brief relief from the heat thanks to the monsoon season. This period, typically from July to September, brings dramatic thunderstorms and occasional downpours. While these storms are short-lived, they can cool things down slightly, although the humidity tends to rise during this time.
If you’re planning outdoor activities in the summer—such as golfing, hiking, or lounging by the pool—make sure to do them early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the peak heat. Many of our Phoenix rentals feature a pool, spending your poolside time can be any time of day, allowing you to still enjoy your vacation without worrying about the midday heat.
