Winchester Mountain Trail is a beautiful 2.9 mile out-and-back hike. With a hefty elevation gain of just under 1300 feet, this trail is rated difficult and recommended for experienced hikers. The moment you start the trail you are met with a gradual ascent. As you progress further, you’ll immerse yourself in the tranquil surroundings of the legendary old-growth forests and soothing sounds of running streams. You’ll be rewarded for your work as the landscape around you will transform into a vibrant meadow bursting with colorful flowers. The flower meadows create a radiant tapestry against the backdrop of rugged snow covered peaks, it’ll feel as if you’ve wandered into a painting. The descent is equally exciting and beautiful.

Despite the ascent and difficulty rating, dogs are also welcome to come along if they are leashed. 

Like most of the hiking areas in the region, due to snow the trail is best used around the months of June to November. You will need a Northwest Forest Pass to enter the trail.

From the trail, the nearest town is Glacier WA. To reach Winchester Mountain Trail from Glacier, head east on State Route 542 (Mount Baker Highway) for about 12 miles. Turn left onto Forest Road 3065 (Twin Lakes Road) and follow it for approximately 5 miles. Continue to the trailhead where parking is available. From there, you can begin your hike up Winchester Mountain, enjoying the scenic beauty and panoramic views along the way.
