A suitable hike for all levels, the popular Huntoon Point via Artist Ridge trail offers a spectacular hiking experience. It is rated as an easy level of hiking difficulty. Despite the leisurely 157 foot elevation gain, you can enjoy extensive and far reaching views of the North Cascades. Among the surrounding prolific peaks, hikers can spot famous mountains such as Mt. Baker and Mt. Shuksan. The trail is abundant with wildflowers which serve as a great contrast when set against the rugged alpine backdrop.

Wildlife admirers would be delighted to hear that many observable animals roam the area. Some examples include marmots, pika, as well as deer and occasionally black bears (sightings of bears are uncommon, but exercise caution). Birders too can expect to find an array of different species to study. The local ptarmigans, woodpeckers and mighty golden eagles are fantastic photo subjects.

Due to heavy snow and how slowly it melts, the trail is only accessible for less than 3 months of the year in the late summer to early fall. You will need a Northwest Forest Pass to enter. Dogs can accompany you as long as they are leashed. To reach Huntoon Point via the Artist Ridge Trail from Glacier, Washington, drive east on State Route 542 for about 24 miles to the Heather Meadows Visitor Center, then continue another 2.5 miles to the Artist Point parking lot (has toilet amenities), which serves as the trailhead. Be sure to check trail and road conditions, bring essentials, and start early to avoid crowds.
